Ben is currently consultant Head of Formats at Motion Content Group. Motion is the production funding and distribution division of global advertising giant WPP. Motion works with broadcasters in a multitude of innovative ways to help fund their premium content ambitions. Ben is tasked with ensuring that Motion get maximum value from the format rights to the shows they fund and also works strategically with broadcasters to identify projects to invest in.
Ben also works as consultant Chief Creative Officer to iZen Producciones, Spain. iZen are Spain’s biggest independent production company. Their most recent commission is one of Spain’s biggest ever dramas, a multi-million euro production of El Cid for Amazon where Ben led the conversations with the Amazon team in London.
Before working as a consultant, Ben was the CCO of the iZen group that consisted of Imagic TV from the Middle East; Zebra Productions, Spain (now part of iZen Spain); Elephant Group, France, Elephant Italy and Chalkboard TV in the UK. Here he looked after all aspects of non-scripted format development, acquisition and sales. Ben was previously MD of Chalkboard which grew quickly from its launch in Sept 2013, backed by the IZEN companies, to become one of the UK’s leading producers of factual, entertainment and reality formats.
From 2009-13, Ben was Managing Director of Shine Groups’ formats business, Shine Network. Here he managed format development, acquisitions and content strategy across the Shine group of companies and also oversaw all aspects of the global production of hit format, Masterchef. Before joining Shine, Ben was Creative Director for Format Development at BBC Worldwide, overseeing the creation of new formats for BBC Worldwide’s growing global network of international production companies.
Ben first made his name in the formats business as Creative Director and Managing Partner of The Chatterbox Partnership, one of the UK’s first and most successful TV format creation businesses. With co-founder, Tom Ellemann, Chatterbox developed more than 30 formats from initial idea through first commission and onto international success generating more than 1300 hours of original production (and counting!) along the way.
Before founding Chatterbox in 1996, Ben was a TV journalist and presenter working on consumer affairs and travel programmes on BBC1 and BBC2. Ben is also a qualified yoga teacher and is learning to paraglide!
