Julian Newby was educated at the University of London, which he left with an Honours degree in Communications. After a short period working as a photographer and draughtsman, he joined Formula One Films in London as assistant producer. He later moved to London talk radio station LBC where he started out as a news scriptwriter and on-air pundit, and later became producer of the award-winning entertainment and current affairs phone-in programme, The Brian Hayes Show. He moved to London Weekend Television where, as Associate Producer, he developed the entertainment and features department of ITV’s Teletext service, Oracle.
In 1990 he turned freelance writer, and wrote a number of books including Inside The Music Business and Inside Broadcasting. As a freelance journalist he has worked as researcher and presenter at Channel 4, launched numerous publications at the Cannes Film Festival, and for the Reed MIDEM Organisation in Cannes, Hong Kong, Miami and Vancouver. He remains Editor in chief of all Reed MIDEM’s Entertainment Division publications, as well as co-founder and Editorial Director of London-based publishing company Boutique Editions Ltd. With Boutique Editions he is Editor in chief of AFCI Locations Magazine and the Cannes Lions Daily News. He also on the editorial teams of Cannes Market News at the Cannes Film Festival, and IFA International, the official publication of the Berlin-based home electronics show IFA.
