Read Drama at the University of Exeter. After graduating in 1979 he ran a touring theatre company acting in, producing and directing a variety of theatre and theatre-in-education productions. In 1986, he joined Hightimes Productions which controlled the format for the highly successful ITV situation comedy ‘Me and My Girl’, starring Richard O’Sullivan and created the situation comedy Brotherly Love for BBC Scotland written by Bernard McKenna. He then joined comedy production house Humphrey Barclay Productions Limited where he subsequently became a company director. In eleven years at HBP he was involved in all of its major productions, including the long running situation comedy series Desmond’s for Channel Four and Surgical Spirit for ITV.
In 1997 he joined John Kaye Cooper at Talent Television, becoming its Managing Director in 1999. At Talent, Tony has overseen all of the company’s innovative productions including one of the first ‘reality’ shows ‘The Villa’, ‘TV Scrabble’ and the break-through reality kid’s format Best of Friends. He also brought inter-active, multi-platform format Test the Nation to the UK (produced for BBC One and a Rose d’Or winner) and is responsible for taking the same format to Japan. Moving back to comedy, Tony is currently producing a brand new 26 part Kid’s comedy series My Phone Genie, which is being shot in Ireland for ITV (UK) and ZDF (Germany).
Tony recently started Talent Films and produced his and Talent Films first theatrical feature film to be released Autumn 2011 by Universal. A comedy drama entitled Outside Bet, it stars Oscar nominated Bob Hoskins and Jenny Agutter. Talent Films also has a number of other scripted television and feature film comedies in development.
Other recent television related activities include being a judge for the Rose d’Or Festival Luzern (2010), Chairman of CIFF (Cambridge International Format Forum 2009 and 2011), Judge for Royal Television Society Awards (2010 and 1011) and moderator at the Fresh Talent Pitch at MIP FORMATS 2010.
In addition to his activities at Talent Television, for the past fifteen years Tony has been Chief Executive of the UK based art charity Discerning Eye which mounts the prestigious ING Discerning Eye Exhibition annually at the Mall Galleries in London.
